Despite previously suggesting that the 2022 World Cup would be his last, Lionel Messi is not ruling out playing in the 2026 World Cup.

The 36-year-old Argentine star, who recently won his eighth Ballon d’Or, has continued to perform well for both club and country, and he says that he will “see” if he is still able to play at the highest level in three years’ time.

“I’m not thinking about the World Cup and I’m not saying 100 percent that I won’t be there because anything can happen,” Messi said in an interview with Argentina’s Star+. “Because of my age, the most normal thing is that I won’t be there. Then we’ll see.”

Messi’s comments come after he helped Argentina qualify for the 2026 World Cup by scoring four goals in their qualifying campaign. He is also set to play in the upcoming Copa America, which will be held in the United States.

While Messi is not guaranteeing that he will play in the 2026 World Cup, his comments suggest that he is at least open to the possibility. His decision will likely depend on his physical condition and his performance in the coming years.

Messi is widely considered to be one of the greatest soccer players of all time. He has won the Ballon d’Or a record eight times, and he has also won the Champions League four times and the Copa America once.
