Manchester United’s recent resurgence was halted on Saturday as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of a dominant Newcastle United side at St James’ Park.

Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute strike proved to be the decisive moment in the match, as Newcastle United controlled possession throughout and continuously threatened the Manchester United goal.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire acknowledged that Newcastle United were the better team on the day, admitting that his side’s intensity and tempo were lacking.

“They were a lot better than us,” Maguire stated. “We grew into the game, but we didn’t have enough in the end.”

The defeat leaves Manchester United in seventh position in the Premier League table, with their chances of qualifying for the Europa League Round of 16 hanging in the balance.

Manchester United will need to bounce back quickly when they face Bayern Munich in their final UEFA Champions League group stage match on Wednesday.
