The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday that spinner Deepak Chahar has withdrawn from the one-day international series and that seamer Mohammed Shami will not participate in either of the country’s two test matches against South Africa.

Subject to passing a fitness test, Shami—whose last test participation occurred during India’s World Test Championship final loss to Australia in June—was selected for the two tests.

“Mr Mohd Shami, whose participation in the test series was subject to fitness has not been cleared by the BCCI medical team and the fast bowler is ruled out of the two tests,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Mr Deepak Chahar has informed the BCCI that he will not be available for the upcoming ODI series due to a family medical emergency. The men’s selection committee has named Mr Akash Deep as his replacement.”

The three-match Twenty20 International series that kicked off India’s tour to South Africa finished equal after the first game was postponed due to rain.

Before the first test starts in Pretoria on December 26 and the second at Newlands in Cape Town on January 3, they will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) from December 17–21.

Before joining the test team, batsman Shreyas Iyer would only participate in the first of the three ODIs against South Africa, according to the BCCI.
