In the midst of discussions about the catch he made during Chennai Super Kings’ second home game of IPL 2024 against Gujarat Titans, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag humorously referred to MS Dhoni as “buzurg”.

While commenting on Cricbuzz, the 45-year-old Sehwag lauded the exceptional fielding efforts displayed by CSK and jokingly referred to the former CSK captain, Dhoni, as ‘buzurg’ (elderly).

“Catches win matches. Ajinkya Rahane picked a good catch, so did Rachin Ravindra. The Buzurg (aged) MS Dhoni also picked one,” Sehwag commented.

Rohan Gavaskar, a former Indian all-rounder who was also a co-panelist with the ex-Delhi batter, promptly responded. The commentator-turned-cricketer questioned why Sehwag didn’t refer to Rahane as an old player. In response, Sehwag highlighted the age difference between the two CSK cricketers.

“Their age is not the same. There is a (age) difference and Rahane is also fitter than MS Dhoni. There is a big difference between a 35-year-old and a 42-year-old. MS is getting old now, there is no doubt about it,” Sehwag replied.

MS Dhoni, who has led the Chennai Super Kings to a record five IPL trophy victories, tying with the Mumbai Indians for the most wins, is arguably the face of the franchise. In the 2024 edition of the high-stakes league, Dhoni continues to play, although the captaincy has been handed over to Ruturaj Gaikwad, a batter from Maharashtra.

The Ranchi native has not yet batted in the 17th edition. However, his performance as a wicketkeeper in the match against the Gujarat Titans drew attention. Notably, the wicketkeeper-batter dove to his right on the third ball of the eighth over in Gujarat’s innings, dismissing Vijay Shankar with a full-stretch catch measuring 2.27 metres off Daryl Mitchell’s bowling. Later in the match, seasoned batter Ajinkya Rahane also made an impressive catch in the outfield, sending David Miller back to the pavilion.

In the meantime, CSK has won both of their matches so far, leading the table with 4 points. After a decisive victory against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener, they clinched a clinical victory against the 2023 runners-up. Next, Gaikwad & Co. will take on the Delhi Capitals in an away game on Sunday, March 31, at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
