Pakistan aims to win T20 World Cup 2024
The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to commence in the United States and the West Indies starting June 1, featuring a lineup of 20 teams, including Pakistan. Despite recent setbacks against Ireland and England, the Pakistani squad is preparing for the upcoming event with determination.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has enlisted the expertise of the esteemed head coach Gary Kirsten and other notable coaching staff to enhance the team’s performance.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has called on fans to rally behind their team and refrain from negative commentary.
Reflecting on the loss to England in the fourth T20I, captain Babar Azam emphasized the need for improvement from the middle-order batsmen, stating, “First six overs, we played very well. After that, the momentum shifted as wickets fell. Our middle-order needs to step up. You need 2-3 good overs in the middle and in the death as well. England’s bowling was very good. Hopefully, we don’t do this in the World Cup. We made a couple of changes due to the injuries. Our powerplay was good. We have played good cricket in patches,” during the post-match presentation.
The team welcomes fresh talent such as Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub, and Usman Khan. Veterans Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, who last appeared in the T20 World Cups of 2016 and 2021 respectively, are also part of the mix, along with eight others who played in the 2022 tournament in Australia.
With aspirations to emulate their 2009 T20 World Cup victory, the team, backed by its players and coaches, is poised for success.
Pakistan boasts a commendable T20 World Cup history, having clinched the title in 2009 under Younis Khan’s captaincy. They reached the finals in the inaugural 2007 World Cup with Shoaib Malik and again in 2022 under Babar’s leadership, albeit finishing as runners-up to England. In 2021, their journey ended in the semi-finals against Australia.
The Pakistani team is scheduled to face the USA in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday, June 6, in Dallas, USA. The highly anticipated clash with India is slated for Sunday, June 9.
