Pakistan and India are traditional rivals
According to Bloomberg, international companies are investing significantly in advertising for the eagerly awaited cricket match between India and Pakistan, capitalizing on the purchasing power of the South Asian diaspora.
The competing nations are scheduled to face each other on June 9 in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. This stadium was constructed in just three months using modular stands from the Formula 1 Grand Prix venue in Las Vegas.
This is the first time the tournament is being hosted in the US, with additional games set to take place in Caribbean countries.
The match holds extra importance as Pakistan recently suffered a surprising loss to the US, providing a significant morale boost to the host nation, which is participating in their first ever World Cup and is ranked 18th globally, behind Nepal and the UAE.
Santosh N, managing partner at D&P Advisory, a firm offering sports valuation services, stated that advertising slots for the game could fetch up to $48,000 for 10 seconds. He added, “The India-Pakistan game always commands a premium.”
He also mentioned that a 10-second slot for India’s games would typically cost around $24,000 on average. To put this into perspective, a Super Bowl ad reportedly costs $6.5 million for 30 seconds, and a 30-second slot during the 2022 football World Cup for UK advertising is about £400,000 ($511,000).
The matches have been strategically scheduled to align with peak viewing times in South Asian countries. For instance, the India-Pakistan match will commence at 10:30 am in New York on Sunday, which corresponds to evening time in India.
