Canada’s captain, Saad bin Zafar, is aiming to exert pressure on Pakistan in their third match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York, with the belief that “anything is possible”.
Canada has a single victory from two matches, having made a remarkable recovery against Ireland in New York after a loss to the United States (USA). The captain is keen to maintain this momentum to keep their World Cup Super 8 aspirations alive.
Conversely, Pakistan has suffered two defeats from two matches, failing to reach the 120-run target set by India on Sunday after an initial loss to the USA. Another defeat on Tuesday would result in their elimination from the tournament.
In the lead-up to their match against Pakistan, Saad expressed that the Canadian team is in high spirits following their successful last match against Ireland, which went “really well”.
“Everybody’s in a positive mood. Our last game went really well,” Saad was quoted by The Canadian Press. “It instilled a belief in us that if we play good cricket on the day, we can take down any opponent.”
He acknowledged that Pakistan is a strong team, but their recent performance has been lacking, which Canada plans to capitalize on by applying early pressure in the match.
“I know that we are coming up against quite a high-ranked and well-experienced team in Pakistan but the reality is lately they haven’t been playing the good brand of cricket that they’re known for,” he continued.
“They are under the pump. They have lost two games. So, if we’re able to play good cricket on the day and we’re able to put some good pressure early on in the game, anything is possible.”
