Sunil Gavaskar, the ex-India skipper, has expressed disappointment with the ICC following the abandonment of the India-Canada match at the T20 World Cup in Lauderhill, Florida, due to a wet outfield.
The field conditions were affected by rain earlier in the week, including on Friday, 14 June, leading to the cancellation despite clear weather on match day.
This incident at Lauderhill marks the third match cancellation in this T20 World Cup, following previous abandonments of Sri Lanka vs Nepal and USA vs Ireland matches.
As a result of these washouts, Sri Lanka was knocked out of the tournament. The subsequent cancellation led to Pakistan’s exit while ensuring the USA’s advancement to the Super 8s.
Gavaskar, now a commentator, criticized the ICC’s decision to hold matches at venues lacking sufficient ground covers.
“The ICC should not host the matches where there are no covers to cover the entire ground. You just can’t cover the pitch and let the other parts of the ground get wet,” Gavaskar remarked following the cancellation of the India vs Canada match.
In Group A, India and the USA have moved on to the Super 8s. Pakistan, Ireland, and Canada have been eliminated. India topped their group with 7 points, followed by the USA with 5 points.
Canada is out with 3 points. Pakistan and Ireland are at 2 and 1 point respectively, with their final group match scheduled for Sunday.
