Pakistan levels Australia’s record with ODI series win over South Africa

CAPE TOWN: Pakistan delivered an emphatic 81-run victory against South Africa in the second ODI on Thursday, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and equalling Australia’s record of three ODI series victories in South Africa.

This landmark achievement adds to Pakistan’s historic ODI series wins in South Africa, previously achieved in 2013 and 2021. Australia is the only other team to accomplish this feat, with series victories in 1997, 2002, and 2011.

The green shirts’ success follows their series triumphs against Zimbabwe and Australia, showcasing their growing strength on foreign soil.

The win was anchored by Kamran Ghulam’s explosive half-century and a stellar bowling performance led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, who claimed 4/47. Naseem Shah provided key support with 3/37 in 8.3 overs, while Abrar Ahmed chipped in with two wickets.

Shaheen’s heroics were pivotal in restricting the Proteas and sealing the series victory. Pakistan had earlier clinched the opening ODI on Tuesday by three wickets.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming two-match Test series between Pakistan and South Africa, scheduled to run from December 26 to January 7.
