DHAKA: Bangladesh has imposed a ban on the telecast of the Indian Premier League (IPL), just a day after announcing that it would not send its national team to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The development follows an incident in which Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after receiving threats from Hindu extremist groups.
In response, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) convened an emergency meeting and recommended to the government that the national team should not travel to India for the T20 World Cup due to security concerns.
Acting on the BCB’s request, Bangladesh’s sports adviser announced that player safety was the government’s top priority and confirmed that the team would not tour India for the tournament.
Subsequently, the BCB formally approached the International Cricket Council (ICC), requesting that Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka.
In the latest move, the Bangladeshi government has decided to ban the broadcast of the IPL within the country. According to an official statement, the ban on the Indian league’s telecast has been imposed for an indefinite period.
The decision further escalates tensions surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in cricketing events hosted in India, with security concerns remaining at the center of the dispute.
