Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, defeated Jelena Ostapenko to win at Eastbourne, providing her the ideal preparation for the Wimbledon’s Monday start.

The 32-year-old, who had previously won at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, was in excellent condition throughout the title match, which she won 6-3, 6-2.

Kvitova won the first set of the women’s tournament by a close margin, and she maintained her advantage by fending off five break points in a single game.

The defending champion Ostapenko survived one match point in the second set, but Kvitova served out the match to win.

“This was a tough match, well done to Jelena. Playing on grass is very special for me and [especially] when you step on such a beautiful court as it is here.

“I enjoyed it a lot. It is really nice to play in front of people again – it is the best preparation for Wimbledon,” Kvitova said.
