Tuesday marks the return of Serena Williams to singles tennis at Wimbledon after a year’s absence.
Iga Swiatek, who has won six consecutive titles, will begin to play on Centre Court at 13:30 local time (12:30 GMT) against Jana Fett, a Croatian qualifier.
Seven-time champion Williams will face unseeded Frenchwoman Harmony Tan in her first singles encounter since an injury caused her to withdraw from her first-round match last year.
Williams, age 40, won her last Wimbledon singles championship six years ago, but she reached the final in 2018 and 2019.
The American, who was granted a wildcard entry for this year’s competition, has 23 Grand Slam singles victories, one less than Margaret Court’s record.
Williams, whose ranking has plummeted to 1,204th in the world as a result of her inactivity, was viewed with increasing skepticism as to whether she would return to competition.
Last week, she warmed up by playing doubles with Ons Jabeur in Eastbourne, and Wimbledon is largely seen as her greatest opportunity to win her 24th Grand Slam.
