Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday has given approval for the first-ever drone policy of Pakistan with an aim to boost its industry and manufacturing opportunities.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain shared this recent development on his Twitter handle.

Fawad informed that “PM @ImranKhanPTI has given go ahead to formulate first ever Drone Policy of Pakistan, the new policy will allow Drone production and specially agriculture Drone manufacturing industry will get huge boost, Import of sophisticated drones will also be allowed.”

Previously in July when swarms of locusts invaded agriculture fields across the country that risked food security, Pakistan developed drones used to spray insecticides and pesticides on fields.

The region saw the first wave of the locust invasion in May last year since 1993. The locusts are believed to have entered into the southwestern Balochistan province from neighboring Iran. These insects, mainly originating from deserts, eat anything from bark to seeds and flowers while traveling up to a speed of 93.2 miles a day. As per the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Pakistan’s 38% of agriculture fields are breeding grounds for the insects.
