Boeing is estimated to start delivering commercial airplanes that will fly on 100 % biofuel by 2030.

The aerospace company’s plans are in line with the aviation industry’s plans to cut back carbon emissions to half by 2050.

According to statistics provided by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), commercial airlines contribute 2% of global carbon emissions and 12% of transport emissions.

Boeing’s Director of Sustainability Strategy, Sean Newsum, said that alleviating environmental damage from fossil fuels is the biggest challenge they’ve had to face.

“It’s a tremendous challenge, it’s the challenge of our lifetime. Aviation industry remains committed to doing its part to reduce its carbon footprint.”

Boeing as a company is required to make significant changes in jet systems, raise the fuel blending requirements along with receiving safety certification by global regulators by the end of ten years.

Boeing had previously set the world’s first commercial airplane flight on a FedEx Corp 777 freighter which used 100% biofuel back in 2018.
