Snapchat is set to launch “Family Center,” a new parental control tool that will allow parents to view who their kid is friends with on the app, as well as who they’ve been communicating with within the last seven days, and more.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel initially revealed the upcoming feature in an interview in October, explaining that it will provide parents more access to how their children use the app and, perhaps, make them feel more at peace with it.

Through its app being heavily used by younger users, Snap is one of the last Big Tech social networks to address the need for parental monitoring features. The Snapchat app now reaches more than 75 percent of 13-34-year-olds in over 20 countries, according to Snap’s NewFronts presentation to advertisers earlier this month, and 80 percent of the US Gen Z population has viewed at least one of its Snap Original series.

The new Family Center feature, according to new pictures of Snapchat’s upcoming Family Center obtained with TechCrunch by-product intelligence firm Watchful, allows parents to view who their adolescent is friends with on the app. Parents will like this since, unlike many other social media platforms, Snapchat’s friend lists are private.

Parents will also be able to see who their adolescent has talked to in the last week, but not the content of those chats. Parents will be able to help their adolescents in reporting abuse and harassment if necessary, according to the screenshots.

Parents will also be able to see who their adolescent has talked to in the last week, but not the content of those chats. Parents will be notified, according to the screenshots. To activate the parental control function, parents must invite their adolescent (or teens) to the new in-app Family Center. The invitee has the choice of accepting or refusing the invitation.

This is, perhaps, a suitable approach to teen parental restrictions because it respects their privacy.

Instead of enabling parents to secretly watch their children, it guarantees that the parent and kid have a discussion about parental monitoring and agree on a set of guidelines that are acceptable for their individual family.

Watchful’s photos show early concepts for Snapchat’s functionality, which is currently under development and not yet online or being tested. It’s worth noting that items alter a lot before they’re released to the broader public. As a result, the final output may differ significantly.
