Sony is developing the first 100MP smartphone sensor
A 100+ megapixel smartphone sensor from Sony has not yet been announced, but one is allegedly on the way. According to leaker Digital Chat Station, the company will adopt an intriguing strategy: instead of targeting the flagship market, its first 100MP sensor would be intended for premium mid-rangers.
According to reports, the sensor will be a part of the Sony IMX8 family. The 54MP 1/1.49″ IMX800 sensor, which was first utilised in the Honor 70 series, just made the series’ debut. We can only make assumptions because DCS withholds information on the 100MP sensor. It won’t be the biggest or most powerful model in Sony’s lineup because it is designed for mid-range consumers.
According to the leaker, the business is also developing the IMX9 series, which will be more powerful and compete with some amazing sensors made by rival Samsung. The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, which is anticipated to be announced next month, and maybe the Galaxy S23 Ultra are believed to use the 200MP HP1 sensor, which Samsung is already promoting (coming next year). Not only that, but Samsung is reportedly also developing a sensor that is even bigger than the GN2’s already enormous 1/1.12″ sensor.
Naturally, Sony already possesses a sizable sensor of its own in the form of the 1.0″ sensor seen in the Xperia Pro-I. Sony struggled to encase that sensor inside a thickness suitable for a phone because it was initially created for the RX100 VII camera (more details in our review).
