Xiaomi 12S series, which includes the 12S, 12S Pro, and 12S Ultra, will be released next week. As the name suggests, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra will be the most powerful phone in the line. It will replace the Mi 11 Ultra from last year.

Xiaomi has been releasing new information about the next phones practically daily as part of their ongoing teasing campaign. As of this writing, the Chinese manufacturer has confirmed that Sony’s IMX989 will be installed in the 12S Ultra, making it the smartphone with the largest camera sensor ever.

The graphic below serves as a teaser, showing how the new 1′′ camera sensor stacks up against its predecessors.

Whether or not Xiaomi will make use of the complete 1-inch sensor remains to be seen. The Sony Xperia Pro I, which similarly has a 1′′ sensor, was only able to take advantage of its center. Companies can use a smaller lens while still taking advantage of the huge pixels, but technically speaking, they are still wasting some of the sensor’s resolution.

The camera module on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra will be far larger than that on the Xperia Pro I, so it’s feasible that the Chinese phone may make greater use of the 1′′ sensor.

Since the teaser campaign is now underway, we should be hearing more details about the forthcoming phones very soon. According to rumours, the 12S series will only be available in China, however this has not been confirmed.
