If you think back to May of this year, it was said that older Amazon Kindle e-readers would lose a key feature in the future. Unfortunately, this “future” date has now come and gone.

This device’s most important feature is that you can buy books on it. This is a pretty big feature, but you can still send files to the e-reader, so it doesn’t make your Kindle useless.

The Keyboard and International models, as well as the fourth- and fifth-generation Kindles that came out in 2011 and 2012, are affected. You can find the model number of your Kindle in the Settings menu, under Device Info. However, it may be easier to just check if you can still buy ebooks.

There are still ways to get digital files onto your Kindle and read them. The on-device Kindle Store is slower and clunkier than the website and app, so we suppose some customers don’t use it.

If you buy books from the Kindle Store on your computer, you can immediately send them to your e-reader. Sending PDFs and other files to your Kindle also works.

It’s important to note, though, that if you have an Android phone, sending books to your Kindle is quite a hassle.
