While we patiently wait for Google to release the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro with the updated Tensor 2 chipset, we have news about the Tensor 3 CPU that will likely be in the Pixel 8 when it comes out next year.

According to GalaxyClub (via 9to5Google), Samsung and Google have already been testing a new version of the Tensor chipset, which is likely to be called the Tensor 3.

The model number for the third-generation chip is said to be S5P9865, and it is being tested on a developer board called Rip current.

This makes it different from the Tensor 2, whose model number is thought to be S5P9855. The model number for the first Tensor chipset is S5P9845, so you can see the pattern.

Chips with everything

We don’t know how much more powerful the Tensor 3 CPU will be, and we don’t know much about the Tensor 2 other than that it’ll power the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

There will be performance and AI processing advancements, but it’s interesting that Google is continuing to work with Samsung on these chips. Tensor processors may be Samsung Exynos-based.

GalaxyClub reports that a processor thought to be the Exynos 1380 is in development, the successor to the Exynos 1280 featured in various mid-range Samsung phones (such as the Galaxy A53).
