Instagram disapproves sharing your location with followers
- The app’s “Precise Location” feature is only for location tags and map features.
- Users can share their location with their followers, but it won’t be shown to the public unless they give permission.
This week, a post on Instagram went viral because it talked about a new iOS update that lets people find “your exact location on Instagram.”
The user said that if you add your location using location tags, people will be able to find your exact location instead of your general location. Because of this, a lot of people went to settings and turned off location permissions.
Instagram responded quickly to these claims and set the record straight in a Twitter thread. The app’s “Precise Location” feature is only for location tags and map features, the company said.
👋 We’ve seen a meme going around about how Instagram uses “precise location.”

People can share their location information with their followers if they want to, but it won’t be shown to the public unless the person gives permission.
Adam Mosseri, who is in charge of Instagram, also said that Location Services is not a new Instagram feature but a setting on smartphones. In your phone’s settings, it’s easy to turn it off.
Viral social media posts aren’t always dependable sources of information, so check online claims. The original post doesn’t say whether Instagram created the location function or simply calls it an “iOS upgrade.”
The user has amended their Instagram post to admit errors. The task of “awareness” remains.
You can disable your phone’s location functions if you’re worried about an app tracking your whereabouts. You can also disable an app’s location permissions. Both iOS and Android phones support this and record app location records.
