Google delegation reached Islamabad on Tuesday. According to sources, the conversations focused on potential for investment and the opening of a compliance office in Islamabad.

Five Google representatives have met with high-ranking government officials from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Law and Justice.

Public policy manager for South Asia, Kyle Gardner, led a trip that visited with key MoITT officials such Secretary IT Mohsin Mushtaq and Member IT Syed Junaid Imam.

The government of Pakistan is taking measures to ensure user data is secure and their privacy is respected, the delegation was told.

According to our sources, the team was pleased with Pakistan’s new data protection rules.

Investment and the opening of a liaison office in Pakistan are two topics that have been covered during the trip. While registering with SECP, Google opened an office in Karachi, but sources say the Ministry of IT wants the business to open a compliance unit in Islamabad instead.

Google is reportedly under pressure from MoITT to open a compliance office in Islamabad, where disputes may be quickly referred in the event of a disagreement. This is per Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunications Syed Aminul Haq.

Google, Facebook, and other tech giants have already been in touch with MoITT about opening headquarters in Pakistan. Google and other corporations can learn more about the local laws and values of Pakistan by opening a compliance office there.

During their discussion with Pakistani officials from the Ministry of IT, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Google delegation discussed potential new investment prospects in the country.

Before that, while in Lahore, the Google team met with authorities from the Punjab IT Board to talk about Google certification and other projects.

Several of Google’s recent projects have begun in Pakistan. Google introduced its certification programme in September to provide Pakistanis with a variety of options for advancing their careers. Google started a suicide hotline in Pakistan in June 2022 to help people dealing with suicidal thoughts or feelings.
