Moto X40 revealed with SD 8 Gen 2 and 165Hz OLED display
Motorola has unveiled two new products, one will likely be the company’s cheapest 5G phone for the foreseeable future and the other is a luxury X-series handset. These are now being introduced in China, but they should eventually spread to the rest of the world.
The previous X30 Pro offered an intriguing blend of robust hardware and an affordable price. The Motorola Moto X40 is a new model that doesn’t identify as a “pro,” but it still packs a punch thanks to its latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 engine and 165Hz display. Motorola definitely does love their high refresh rate screens.
The display’s diagonal is 6.7″ and its resolution is 1,080 by 2,400 pixels. It is a 10-bit panel that supports DC dimming and HDR10+. Instead of being positioned on the side, the fingerprint reader is now located beneath the display. With the potent Adreno 740 GPU, this is Motorola’s first 165Hz display, which could tempt customers away from expensive gaming smartphones.
Whether you’re a pro or not, the X40 offers 125W wired charging and wireless charging as well, albeit at a lower 15W output than the X30 Pro’s 50W. However, non-Pro Motos typically ignore it entirely. The cable charger will charge your phone as quickly as possible, taking it from a dead battery to 50% in just 7 minutes. By the way, the battery has a 4,600mAh capacity, which is essentially the same as the previous Pro.
Similar rationale may be applied to the camera, which on the X40 has a 50MP sensor (1.56″) rather of a 200MP primary sensor. It supports 4-in-1 binning and features OIS with native pixels of 1.0 m. This opens the possibility of an X40 series flagship model.
A 50MP sensor (1.3 m pixels) ultra wide-angle lens (117°) is located next to the main camera. This one includes autofocus so it can capture macro shots at a distance of 2.5 cm/1. A 12MP (IMX663, 1.22 m-pixel) 2x portrait camera is also included on board. A 60MP selfie camera with a punch hole in the center is available for taking selfies. Aside from the main sensor, this configuration is relatively identical to the X30 Pro.
Returning to the chipset, the 3,002mm2 Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is cooled by an 11-layer system that incorporates a vapor chamber. The chipset is coupled with 128, 256, or even 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage and 8/12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Due to the dual SIM functionality, there is no space for a microSD card. No 3.5mm jack either, however the 2021 model also lacked this feature. The new one comes pre-installed with Android 13 and My UI 5.0.
The X40 receives an IP68 classification, which certifies that it can withstand water infiltration for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 metres (5 feet). 7000-series aluminum makes up the mid-frame, while Gorilla Glass Victus with a soft-touch finish covers the back (available in Blue and Black). We’re not sure if that applies to the front as well, the details provided by Motorola are sparse. The phone weighs 199g and is 8.6mm thick, which is about the same as its predecessor.
