WhatsApp will offer voice notes as a status in a forthcoming feature update, which sounds quite cool given that the messaging service already allows you to send voice messages in regular chats. Here’s all we know about WhatsApp‘s most recent update.

According to WaBetaInfo, the new feature will be included in the 2.2.21.5.0 Android beta release, and eligible users will notice it in the app’s text status area. The messaging software even allows you to specify who can see your voice status update.

People will also have more control over their voice recordings, as the app will allow them to delete a clip before making it public.

It is unknown whether the play/pause mechanism would be as smooth as the one offered by WhatsApp for regular talks. It is unknown whether the voice status function will have an edit or replay option. We should have more clarity on this as the feature becomes more widely deployed.

This feature, however, has a time limit as well. People will only have 30 seconds to record a voice note.

In addition, voice notes sent via the Status section will be automatically erased after 24 hours, just like photographs or videos now posted as Status on WhatsApp.
