He explained that studies were conducted in the regions of Imo, Ogun and Kwara States.

“We are here now to discuss the findings on the baseline study. We went to field to see if farmers are aware of these digital solutions to climate change. What are the challenges farmers face with climate change? If they use these digital provisions, is it affordable for them?”

The workshop aims to support the development of an app designed to assist struggling farmers in the country by introducing digital solutions to enhance their agricultural practices and increase local food production.

Digital agriculture encompasses a range of tools that enhance farming processes. For instance, advancements in GPS and satellite technology enable precise field mapping, allowing farmers to define accurate field boundaries and analyze soil variations that impact farming methods.

Furthermore, various digital sensors collect data on soil moisture, temperature, nutrient levels, humidity, and other factors, providing farmers with timely information about their fields. This data helps them make informed decisions to cultivate more resilient crops. Drones equipped with cameras can also be utilized to gather high-resolution data and images, aiding in crop monitoring and disease detection.

Enhanced crop management is facilitated through the processing of extensive datasets by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. These tools can predict crop yields, detect disease outbreaks, and recommend optimal planting and harvesting times.

Additionally, robotics are increasingly used for tasks such as weeding, planting, and harvesting, improving labor productivity and reducing the reliance on manual labor, which may not always be available or efficient. These are just a few examples of digital farming technologies.

Other applications include blockchain for transparent supply chains, variable rate technology to minimize waste, smart irrigation for efficient water usage, and weather forecasting for timely planting decisions.

By adopting digital agricultural technologies, farming practices can become more productive, resource-efficient, and sustainable, resulting in higher-yielding crops that can feed more people. However, successful implementation requires investment in new and improved technology, educating farmers on its usage, and addressing data security concerns.

Given the increasing necessity of these technologies due to climate change, the agricultural sector must adapt to avoid becoming obsolete.
