Apple has announced the upcoming integration of Rich Communication Services (RCS) into its iPhones, scheduled for 2024.

This represents a significant change for Apple, as RCS is a messaging standard similar to iMessage but functions over SMS. Although this integration means that iPhones will offer enhanced messaging features when interacting with Android devices—such as read receipts, typing indicators, and high-quality media sharing—it does not signify the adoption of iMessage itself.

Adding RCS to iPhones is a reaction to the increasing need for improved compatibility across various operating systems in messaging. According to an Apple representative, embracing the RCS Universal Profile, as outlined by the GSM Association, is intended to elevate the user experience over conventional SMS or MMS. It’s crucial to emphasize that iMessage will coexist with RCS, retaining its position as a secure and favored messaging choice for Apple users.

Despite these improvements, the color of chat bubbles, a subject widely debated in the US, will stay the same. Messages sent through RCS are anticipated to continue appearing in green bubbles, unlike the blue bubbles linked with iMessage. Although this difference may seem minor, it carries significant social implications in certain circles.

In a related update, the technology company Nothing has recently launched Nothing Chats, a feature that provides iMessage compatibility for Android devices. This offers a distinct solution for Android users who desire the sought-after blue bubble experience.
