Samsung Electronics, the South Korean smartphone giant, is set to introduce a real-time translation service on calls utilizing AI technology next year, as a company spokesperson informed AFP on Friday.

Samsung is the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, representing a fifth of global sales from July to September. In contrast, Apple holds the second position with a 16 percent market share, according to data from market tracker Counterpoint.

The upcoming real-time translation feature will be integrated into Samsung‘s new Galaxy flagship model, scheduled for an early launch next year, as confirmed by the company representative.

The feature will facilitate “real-time translation in audio and text while the callers are on the line,” stated the spokesperson. However, the number of languages supported has not yet been finalized.

The translation capability will function even if the call partner is using a non-Samsung smartphone, thanks to the utilization of “on-device AI technology” in the new model.

Engaging in conversations with foreigners using the new AI feature will be “as simple as turning on closed captions” during streaming shows, Samsung stated in a press release. Additionally, private conversations will remain securely confined within the phones.

The revelation coincides with the South Korean company’s efforts to advance its generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, encompassing three domains: language, code, and image. Presently, it is in use among company personnel.

The company intends to integrate the AI system into its diverse array of products in the near future. However, specific details regarding the timing or the models involved were not disclosed.
