This move highlights the FTC’s growing interest in pursuing cases involving AI, particularly in response to concerns that the technology could be used to turbo-charge fraud. Under the new process, it will be easier for FTC staff to issue demands for documents as part of an investigation if it is related to AI.

In recent months, the FTC has taken several other actions to address the potential for AI-related harm. In September, Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, a Democrat who has been nominated to another term, agreed with two Republican nominees to the agency that the FTC should focus on issues like the use of AI to make phishing emails and robocalls more convincing. And last week, the agency announced a competition aimed at identifying the best way to protect consumers against fraud and other harms related to voice cloning.

These actions demonstrate the FTC’s commitment to protecting consumers from the potential harms of AI misuse. As AI continues to evolve, the FTC will need to remain vigilant in identifying and addressing new and emerging threats.
