Australia will join forces with the United States and the United Kingdom to test a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered submarine tracking system.

The announcement comes on the heels of an incident last month in which Australian naval personnel were injured after a Chinese warship activated its sonar despite warnings that divers were in the water.

The new AI system will be deployed on US Navy aircraft during Pacific patrols to process information from sonobuoys, underwater detection devices. This technology is expected to significantly enhance the ability of the three nations to track Chinese submarines in the region.

The announcement of the AI-powered submarine tracking system is part of a broader AUKUS defense agreement between Australia, the US, and the UK. The agreement also includes a $3 billion military training and equipment package for Australia from the US.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said that the incident with the Chinese warship highlighted the need for the AUKUS agreement and the importance of moving quickly to implement its provisions.

“The incident absolutely highlights the need for this arrangement and it absolutely highlights the need for speed in this arrangement,” Marles said. “And I think you can see that speed.”

The testing of the AI-powered submarine tracking system is just one of the initial steps being taken under the AUKUS agreement. The three nations are also working together on a number of other initiatives, including developing new hypersonic capabilities and strengthening their cyber security cooperation.

The AUKUS agreement has been met with some criticism from China, which views the pact as a threat to its own security interests. However, Australia, the US, and the UK have defended the agreement, saying that it is necessary to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
