Google has made a strategic decision to streamline its payment services, leading to the forthcoming closure of Google Pay in the United States. This move is part of the company’s efforts to strengthen its digital wallet offering, Google Wallet.

In a blog post issued on Thursday, Google announced that the standalone Google Pay app in the U.S. would cease operations by June 4, 2024. However, it’s important to clarify that Google Pay will continue to function normally in other regions like India and Singapore.

According to the announcement, Google Wallet has enjoyed significantly higher usage compared to Google Pay, particularly among Android users. Its ability to store credit cards for tap-to-pay transactions, digital IDs, and public transit passes has established it as a more practical choice.

Despite the impending closure of Google Pay, users need not worry. They can continue to use the U.S. version of the app for their payment needs until 4th June.

Additionally, even after the shutdown, users will still be able to transfer funds from their Google Pay accounts to their bank accounts through the Google Pay website.
