The ability to retrieve your erased messages on an iPhone was initially introduced with iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.1. The only constraint you may face is that you can perform this within a 30-day period, and if unsuccessful, you will not be able to recover the deleted text messages on your iPhone.

Steps to follow to recover deleted messages from Recently Deleted:

  • Open Messages
  • Tap on Filters (top left)
  • Tap on Recently Deleted
  • You will find messages that were deleted in the past 30 days here. To recover one tap on it.

Recover deleted messages on iPhone from iCloud backup

If 30 days have elapsed and there’s no possibility of recovering your deleted text messages on your iPhone, your next best alternative is to use an iCloud backup.

Bear in mind that to retrieve deleted messages on an iPhone via an iCloud backup, you must have a backup from the time the text message was deleted. Furthermore, restoring any past iCloud backup will result in the loss of everything you’ve saved on your device since then.

Follow the following steps to recover deleted messages using iCloud backup:

  • Tap on your Apple ID card at the top
  • Select iCloud
  • Now choose Manage Storage, and then Backups
  • Opt for the right backup

  • Now you’ll have to reset your iPhone to factory settings and set it up again in order to restore from your iCloud backup during the process.
  • To reset your iPhone, go to General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings
