Discord preparing to roll out ads
Sources close to the matter have revealed that Discord, a popular social media platform among gamers, is allegedly preparing to roll out advertisements, marking a significant shift from its previous policy of avoiding them.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, these ads are set to make their debut on Discord’s free platform this week.
The ads, which will be sourced from video game companies, are designed to attract users by offering rewards for accomplishing in-game tasks. To support this initiative, Discord is reportedly planning to hire more than a dozen ad sales professionals. The company has also stated that users will have the option to turn off these ads in their settings.
This represents a major shift for Discord, as both the platform and its CEO, Jason Citron, have consistently rejected the idea of relying on ads, a common practice among other social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and others.
A representative from Discord has confirmed the accuracy of the company’s statements as reported by WSJ. This move comes at a time when many online services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and Paramount+, are introducing ad-supported tiers to increase their revenue and engage with users who may not choose premium, ad-free subscriptions.
This ad model has been successful for other social media platforms like TikTok, where users often make purchases directly through the platform, leading to high conversion rates. The same trend is observed on Facebook and Instagram, where users make purchases based on discoveries made on the platform.
Currently, Instagram is the preferred platform for ad sales, with 47% of consumers discovering clothing on the social media app in the 30 days prior to the survey.
