Huawei offers Ascend 910C AI Chips as alternative to Nvidia
Chinese technology giant Huawei has begun offering samples of its new Ascend 910C AI chips to major domestic AI companies. Many of these companies currently depend on Nvidia’s products, which have faced increasing trade restrictions from the US.
According to the South China Morning Post, while specific details about the Ascend 910C remain limited, it is anticipated to be a significant upgrade over its predecessor and could compete with Nvidia’s H100 AI chip in computing power.
This move comes as Nvidia grapples with US trade limitations, affecting its ability to engage with Chinese markets. The latest restrictions prevent Nvidia from selling its H20 AI accelerators, designed for China, further pushing Chinese tech firms to seek domestic alternatives.
If the trade ban on Nvidia continues, Huawei’s Ascend 910C may become an appealing option for frustrated tech companies unable to reliably purchase foreign AI equipment.
However, the future of China’s AI hardware market remains uncertain. Huawei previously faced production capacity challenges with the Ascend 910B, leading some companies back to Nvidia.
If Huawei can overcome these production hurdles and maintain a steady supply of the Ascend 910C, it could significantly alter the competitive landscape, offering a robust domestic alternative amidst ongoing uncertainty with Nvidia.
