Apple’s newly released MacBook Pros, equipped with M4 chips, feature a noteworthy yet unannounced display enhancement. According to Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the new MacBook Pros incorporate quantum dot (QD) film technology, replacing the red KSF phosphor film used in previous models. The cadmium-free QD film enhances color gamut and motion performance, marking a significant display improvement.

Apple had previously avoided QD films due to their reliance on cadmium, but advancements now offer a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution.

Display and Performance Upgrades

While the new MacBook Pro models continue to use LCD screens, the QD film upgrade signifies a step forward in display quality, though it doesn’t rival QD-OLED performance. This enhancement is available across all models, including those with an optional nano-texture glass finish.

The nano-texture finish, first introduced with the iPad Pro 2024 series, supports brightness levels of 1,000 nits for standard SDR content and 1,600 nits for HDR material, while reducing glare for better outdoor visibility.

M4 Chip Variants and Design

The 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pros come with three chip options: the base M4, the M4 Pro (initially seen in the Mac mini), and the high-performance M4 Max.

The 14″ model also gains an additional Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port, bringing the total to three, alongside a MagSafe charging port, headphone jack, dual Thunderbolt ports, and HDMI output.

Apple continues to refine its flagship laptops with these upgrades, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and user experience.
