Google is introducing a new AI-powered image generator in Google Docs, utilizing its Gemini technology. This feature enables users with paid Google Workspace accounts to easily create visuals to enhance their documents.

Similar to Microsoft’s AI-driven art tools in Office products, Google’s new image generator allows users to generate images directly within Google Docs. It is available to users with paid plans, including Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium add-ons.

To use the feature, users can go to Insert > Image > Help me create an image, which opens a sidebar where they can describe the type of image they want. The tool also offers a variety of art styles, such as “Photography” or “Sketch,” and different aspect ratios—square, horizontal, or vertical—based on the document’s format. Users can even create full-bleed cover images for pageless documents.

Powered by Google’s Imagen 3 generator, the tool promises improved image quality, with better detail, enhanced lighting, and fewer artifacts compared to previous versions. This follows the introduction of a similar feature in Google Slides last year, which offered AI tools for slide generation.

The new feature will begin rolling out to domains on a rapid release schedule today, with full availability expected within the next 15 days. Domains on the scheduled release will gain access starting December 16th.
