Google unveils Shield Email to tackle burner emails
Google is preparing to launch its new feature, Shield Email, designed to safeguard users from spam emails and enhance their data privacy. This move aims to address the growing issue of spam emails, which often arise from mandatory sign-ups for apps and services.
Apple already offers a similar solution, Hide My Email, within iCloud, allowing users to create temporary burner email addresses to protect their primary accounts. Now Google is stepping up with its innovative approach.
Shield Email will help Android users guard against potential online threats by generating random and unique email addresses for app sign-ups. These temporary addresses will forward emails to the user’s primary inbox but can be deactivated anytime to block spam and prevent data breaches.
The feature will automatically create disposable email IDs for sign-ups, keeping primary emails safe from spam and privacy risks. Google may initially limit this feature to Google One subscribers, but a free version with restricted functionality—such as a limited number of disposable emails—is also expected.
Apple’s Hide My Email integrates seamlessly with Safari and Mail, enabling users to send emails via randomly generated addresses. Similarly, Google’s Shield Email could merge with Gmail and Google Chrome, enhancing its usability and accessibility.
With this feature, Google is likely to offer an effective tool for managing spam emails while strengthening user privacy, positioning itself as a strong contender against Apple’s existing solution.
