Instagram to launch Community Notes feature soon
Instagram is reportedly preparing to roll out a Community Notes feature, enabling users to add contextual information or opinions to published posts. This development comes as part of Meta’s broader effort to enhance transparency and reduce misinformation across its platforms.
According to developer Alessandro Paluzzi, the feature is currently under development and unavailable to users. It will reportedly allow individuals to write notes by tapping the three vertical dots next to any post and selecting the “Write community note” option, positioned above the Report icon.
Meta has not announced an official release date but plans to launch the feature in the United States first, with a global rollout to follow.
The Community Notes feature is already in an advanced testing phase on Meta’s Threads platform, signaling its imminent introduction on Instagram.
Meta describes the feature as a way to encourage diverse perspectives on misleading content, allowing users to write additional context or opinions. Notes deemed useful by the community will appear under the respective posts.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that this move aligns with simplifying content policies and fostering free expression. He noted that restrictions on topics like immigration and gender will be adjusted to reflect mainstream discourse better.
The company’s initiative follows the recent discontinuation of its previous fact-checking program, which faced criticism for censorship and overly rigid guidelines. Zuckerberg emphasized Meta’s commitment to empowering user voices across its platforms.
