Microsoft has announced the integration of Neural Processing Unit (NPU)-optimized versions of DeepSeek R1, an advanced AI model, into Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs.

This move will enable developers to create AI-powered applications that run efficiently on devices without relying on cloud processing.

DeepSeek R1 Coming to Copilot+ PCs

Initially, the DeepSeek R1-based features will be available on Snapdragon X-powered devices. Microsoft will begin with the “DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B” model, targeting laptops equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite chips.

Leading brands like Asus, Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Acer will be among the first to receive this upgrade. The rollout prioritizes Snapdragon X chips due to their superior AI processing capabilities and power efficiency.

Later, Intel Core Ultra 200V and AMD Ryzen AI 300 series will also support DeepSeek R1 Distill. Additionally, distilled DeepSeek R1 7B and 14B variants will be available via AI Toolkit, maximizing the potential of Copilot+ PC NPUs.

Key Benefits

One major advantage is that DeepSeek R1-based AI features will function offline, eliminating the need for an internet connection. This enhances data privacy, as user data will no longer be sent to the cloud for processing.

With this integration, Microsoft aims to revolutionize AI-powered computing, making it more accessible, efficient, and secure for users worldwide.
