OpenAI launches ‘o3-mini’ with advanced thinking abilities
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has finalized its latest reasoning AI model, O3 Mini, and is set to launch it within the next few weeks, CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday.
Altman revealed on social media platform X that the Microsoft-backed company had incorporated user feedback into its plans, ensuring that both the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT would be released simultaneously.
Last December, OpenAI disclosed that it was testing reasoning models O3 and O3 Mini, signaling intensifying competition with tech giants like Google in developing more advanced AI models capable of solving complex challenges.
The company had initially planned to roll out O3 Mini by the end of January, followed by the full O3 model. These advanced large language models are expected to surpass existing systems in performance, potentially drawing increased investment and users.
In September 2024, OpenAI introduced O1 AI models, emphasizing their ability to spend more time processing queries for solving intricate problems. According to the company, these models demonstrated enhanced capabilities in tackling advanced tasks across science, coding, and mathematics.
The upcoming O3 and O3 Mini models are set to build on this foundation, offering even greater processing power and versatility.
Earlier this week, OpenAI launched a beta feature called Tasks for ChatGPT, marking its entry into the virtual assistant market and positioning itself as a competitor to Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
OpenAI’s groundbreaking release of ChatGPT in late 2022 spurred massive investment in AI firms and contributed to the company securing a $6.6 billion funding round in October, driven by its continued popularity and innovative product offerings.
