Apple has unveiled its first custom-designed modem chip, marking a major step toward reducing its reliance on Qualcomm. The newly launched iPhone 16e, priced at $599, is the first device to feature this new modem. Apple plans to integrate the chip across its product lineup in the coming years.

Apple’s New Modem Chip

The modem chip is part of Apple’s C1 subsystem, which integrates key components like processors and memory. According to Apple executives, the C1 system enhances battery life, making the iPhone 16e the most power-efficient 6.1-inch phone in Apple’s lineup.

Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, Johny Srouji, stated that the company is focusing on long-term technological advancements rather than just a single product.

Features and Limitations

The C1 subsystem is built using 4-nanometer and 7-nanometer chip technologies, ensuring compatibility with 180 carriers across 55 countries. It also supports advanced features like custom GPS systems and satellite connectivity.

However, the C1 modem does not currently support millimeter-wave 5G networks, an area where Qualcomm leads.

The Challenge of Modem Development

Previously, Apple relied on Qualcomm for modem chips, as designing them is highly complex. Modems must be compatible with hundreds of carriers worldwide.

Only a handful of companies, including Samsung, MediaTek, and Huawei, have successfully developed custom modem chips. Apple’s move signals its ambition to become more self-reliant in hardware development.
