WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is introducing a new feature that gives users more control over how media is downloaded and stored. With this update, users can choose whether incoming photos and videos are saved in “standard” or “HD” quality.

This feature is currently being tested by select users on WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.18.11. It can be found in the app’s Storage and Data settings and is aimed at solving a common issue—too many high-resolution files in group chats that take up phone storage and use a lot of data.

When someone sends HD media, WhatsApp now uploads both standard and HD versions of the file. Since the app uses end-to-end encryption, the server doesn’t compress the files. Instead, the recipient’s app downloads the version that matches their selected preference.

If you usually download media in standard quality but want to view the HD version later, you can request it from the server—if it hasn’t expired.

This feature is especially helpful for people with limited data or weak internet connections, while still giving HD lovers the option to enjoy high-quality files. WhatsApp plans to roll this out to everyone in the coming weeks, but for now, beta testers are already using it.
