Meta has launched a major spam cleanup on Facebook, removing 10 million fake profiles and half a million spam accounts during the first half of 2025. With this move, Meta aims to protect original creators and enhance user experience by demoting low-quality content and restricting monetization for repeat offenders.

Meta Cracks Down on Plagiarized and Repetitive Content:

Meta is ramping up its efforts to combat “unoriginal” content, targeting posts that reuse videos, images, or text without adding creative value. Facebook’s systems are increasingly flagging repetitive or plagiarized content, cracking down on spammy behavior, and fake engagement.

Meta Targets Coordinated Spam Networks:

Meta is reducing the reach of suspect accounts, removing their eligibility for monetization, and actively dismantling coordinated networks that flood users’ feeds with duplicate content. In 2024 alone, the company took down over 100 million fake pages and 23 million impersonator profiles.

Half a Million Spam Accounts Hit with Demotion Penalties:

Meta has confirmed that, in addition to removing fake profiles, it has demoted comments and limited the distribution of around 500,000 accounts showing spammy behavior, such as constant copy-pasting and impersonation. The platform aims to ensure original creators receive the visibility and recognition they deserve, rather than being overshadowed by low-effort content. Meta is also testing attribution tools that link reused content back to its source, giving creators proper credit and holding re-users accountable.
