Instagram has introduced a new AI-powered feature that allows users to turn static photo carousels in Stories into smooth animated video transitions. Called AI Transition, the tool uses generative AI to blend multiple still images and create a seamless moving sequence that looks like a short video.
To use the feature, users must first agree to Meta AI’s terms of service. After that, the option appears in the Stories gallery. Users can select two or more photos, and the AI automatically creates a smooth transition by blending poses, backgrounds and other elements to simulate motion. The final clip can be posted directly to Stories or saved and shared as a video, including in Reels.
Meta says the update is designed to make photo-based Stories more creative without needing to record videos. The feature is part of Instagram’s growing collection of AI tools, which already includes generative effects, caption suggestions and background-removal features, as the company continues to expand artificial intelligence across its platforms.
Although Instagram has not released official examples yet, similar AI morphing tools on other apps have produced mixed results. Transitions usually look more natural when photos have similar poses or follow a theme such as outfit changes or travel pictures. However, the technology can sometimes create awkward distortions, including unnatural body movements.
The new feature has been introduced to keep Stories engaging and help Instagram compete more strongly with short-video platforms like TikTok and Snapchat. By turning photo carousels into dynamic clips, AI Transition provides an easy way for users who prefer photos to create video-style content and gain more engagement.
