After a swimmer was savagely slain by a shark attack off the coast of South Africa, a beach vacation turned into a terrifying experience.
At Sanctuary Beach in Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday afternoon, the guy was viciously mauled to death as bystanders hurriedly called the police.

Social media videos purportedly of a great white shark cruising the South African shoreline minutes before the attack are visible.

After witnesses raised the alarm, the National Sea Rescue sent out two rescue craft, but their efforts were in futile.

“On arrival at the site, the corpse of an adult male, thought to be a local, was removed from the water from the back surf line onto an NSRI rescue craft,” said NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon.

“The body was brought to the NSRI Plettenberg Bay rescue station.

“An NSRI doctor, Western Cape EMS and the South African Police Services responded.”

The man was pronounced dead there and then.

Following the incident, according to Lambinon, the Bitou Municipality shuttered all adjacent beaches.

“Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man,” Mr Lambinon added.

“The NSRI and Bitou Municipality are appealing to sea users, bathes, sailors, paddlers and boaters in Plettenberg Bay and also on the Southern Cape coastline to exercise caution following this fatal incident.”
