After a swimmer at Jones Beach reported suffering a “potential shark bite” on Thursday, authorities in Nassau County said that they will increase beach patrols for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Around 1 p.m. at the state park in Wantagh, the 37-year-old male “received a laceration to his right foot,” according to a press release from Nassau County Police on Friday.

He was given suspected bite treatment by medical personnel on the beach before being transferred to a hospital, according to authorities.

After a fisherman observed a 10-foot mako shark in Point Lookout, which is located 11 miles west of Jones Beach, the Town of Hempstead established a new “Shark Patrol” for Memorial Day weekend.

Lifeguards who monitor the coast on jet skis in search of evidence of the poisonous fish make up the new patrol, which encompasses town beaches, according to officials.

“We actually are investing in a crew that will now hit the waters, go on the shoreline, up and down this area of the coast and see if they can spot any sharks in the region,” Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin reportedly said.
