Recently, a lucky couple from the United States won a total of $26 million (about Rs 2.6 crore) in different state lottery games. Jerry and Marge Selbee live in Michigan, US, and are both retired. They have six kids and used to own a store on Main Street. Mr. Selbee, who was 83 years old, was in charge of the alcohol and cigarettes at their shop, and Mrs. Selbee was in charge of the books and sandwiches.

LA Times says that couple used the lottery money to fix up with there house and help pay for the educations of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2003, Mr. Selbee played a game called Winfall and won his first lottery ticket. But the couple found a legal flaw in the tournament that was sold all over the United States .

Mr. Selbee told  that he learned that the Winfall lottery had a feature called “rolldown.” If no one won, the jackpot would roll down and the prize money would go up. Mr. Selbee has a math background, and he figured out that, according to the law of averages, if enough tickets were bought during weeks when roll failures were announced, someone would win. So, they bought a huge number of lottery tickets.

“Unlike the Mega Millions games you may have heard of, where the jackpot keeps growing until someone matches all six numbers and wins the big prize, in Winfall, if the jackpot reached $5 million and no one matched all six numbers, all the money “rolled down” to the lower-tier prize winners, greatly increasing the payouts for those who matched five, four, or three numbers,” said Mr. Selbee.

“In my first play, I put $2,200 on the table, but I only won $50. So that taught me to take into account the difference between the math and the chance of getting more or less,” he said.

When a rolldown was called for the second time, he moved right away. He bought $3,600 worth of Winfall tickets and won $6,300. The report said that he then bet $8,000 and almost doubled his money.

They soon played for $100,000. Mr. Selbee founded GIS. He stacked victory record books. In 2012, Winfall was discontinued.

Mr. Selbee has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Western Michigan University and worked at Kellogg’s cereal headquarters in Battle Creek.
