According to a shocking new survey, more than 257 million Americans believe aliens exist.

A staggering 78% of the country’s 330 million people believe in extraterrestrials.

One-third believe aliens have abducted humans in the past, and 37% believe US scientists have secretly communicated with alien life.

However, they are divided as to whether the space explorers are friends or foes; exactly half believe they are friendly and come in peace, while the other half believe aliens are currently plotting the destruction of Earth.

Researchers for eyewear behemoths During their survey, MyVision polled 1,013 female, male, and non-binary Americans aged 18 to 80.

They also examined the National UFO Reporting Center Database to determine where Americans are most likely to see an alien and determined that California has twice as many close encounters as its nearest rival Florida.

According to the scientific website StudyFinds, two states historically associated with alien conspiracy beliefs turned out to be among the least likely locations for a close encounter.

Nevada, which is home to the US Air Force’s ultra-secret Area 51 installation, which is said to contain wreckage from a crashed alien ship, is placed 27th out of 50 states.

New Mexico, which is home to Roswell, where the UFO is claimed to have crashed in 1947, was ranked 28th.

The poll was released as NASA, the US space agency, started the most determined alien quest in global history, led by a former astronaut.
