Cannibal birds as UK faces flu epidemic with poultry in lockdown
With a new outbreak of avian flu, chickens may become cannibalistic, prompting farmers to quarantine their flocks.
With the country facing its worst bird flu outbreak in history and the possibility of cannibalistic chickens, one expert warned that “confined spaces” could lead to a massacre of chickens eating chickens.
However, a poultry quarantine appeared to be essential following reports of the epidemic, which had farmers bringing their flock indoors and away from the potentially cannibalistic virus that might damage the birds.
An expert has cautioned that potential antidotes and vaccines would be “terribly effective” against the current strain, raising the prospect of cannibalistic fowl.
It comes as Cotswolds Chickens’ Anthony Allen told BBC Radio 4 that “the biggest issue it presents to chicken keepers” is that there may not be enough space to keep their hens safe.
Allen went on to say that farmers “may not necessarily have a covered outdoor area to keep chickens,” and he warned of “cannibalism” in “confined spaces.”
According to the poultry specialist, “under lockdown conditions that the chickens should be kept inside and undercover and that does present problems.”
Allen also stated that the scenario “isn’t ideal but clearly we have a problem and we have to do something about it.”
Dr Christine Middlemiss, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, echoed his remarks, saying that there is a “very live, global discussion” on the vaccination of chickens but that it only happens in “very exceptional circumstances.”
