Hughes made headlines when he purchased a three-bedroom house in Wrexham for a Ukrainian Refugee family. He paid 100,000 pounds for the property.

Hughes said on Facebook that he was horrified after seeing the horrific images of the battle. He explained how he first considered putting a new family up in a portion of his house, “Our first thought was to annexe [sic] part of our house to create a private living area for a family.”

He then noted that the construction will be crowded and take two to three months, according to an architect. That’s when he decided to buy a new home and try to find out whether there were any families in need of assistance.

Then Hughes was put in touch with Maria’s family, according to the BBC. Maria and her three boys, ages 10, 12, and 14, escaped Ukraine. If their immigration requirements are completed on schedule, they should be able to move into the Wrexham house by April 10.

Hughes attempted to furnish the house with the aid of his friend Julie Simkins. Simkins used a Facebook page called Wrexham and Ukraine United to ask community members to give their time to paint the house and create wardrobes and bunk beds.

Many individuals have been affected by Hughes and his friend’s generous acts.
