Wildlife officials in Connecticut said that wildlife biologists had to save a bear cub whose head was stuck in a plastic container.

On June 23, a mother bear with three cubs tipped over a trash can in the town of Harwinton in Litchfield County. One of the cubs then stuck its head in a clear plastic jar that had fallen out of the trash can.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Fish and Wildlife Division said, “Given the warm weather and tight fit of the container, it was important to try and free the cub quickly.”

Wildlife biologists waited for the cub to get down from the tree it was in, then gave it something to make it sleepy and took the box away.

Wildlife officials said the bear wasn’t hurt and was able to find its mother quickly.

Will Healey, a spokesman for DEEP, said that the incident shows why people should make sure their trash is properly thrown away and locked up. “We all need to do our part to keep bears and other wildlife safe and wild,” he said.
