When a slope in the Chinese province of Sichuan broke, a lone car escapes an avalanche and rocks and other debris fell onto the isolated road, forcing a driver to speed away from the mess.

On July 5, an avalanche sent smoke, rocks, and mud flying toward the Wenchuan-Maerkang Highway in China and a car driving on it.

It looked like the big rockfall began high up on the mountainside. The driver just got out of a mountain tunnel before the debris caught up with the car.

In a James Bond movie, the bad guy might have set off an explosion that caused the rockslide, but in this case, it’s likely that China’s bad weather was to blame.

This summer, the north of China has been very hot, while the south has been unusually wet. Mud and water from rainstorms move rocks and other things downstream. As rocks and dirt rush down a mountainside, a landslide can damage property and even kill people.

Brazil had the deadliest landslide of the year. More than 100 people died in Petrópolis, which is in the mountains 25 miles north of Brazil.

More than 20 people died in a landslide in Montecito, California, in 2018. The landslide happened when heavy rain fell on fire scars, which made waves of mud, rocks, and other debris that killed people. In 2014, 43 people died in a huge landslide near Oso, Washington.

Local news says that our would-be James Bond made it through the dangerous trip without getting hurt. Due to repairs, the road may be closed for a while.
